Tips for Good Service
WHEELCHAIRS AND LIFE SUPPORT EQUIPMENT
If you use a wheelchair or scooter, please keep it in good condition! If
the driver believes they cannot safely transport you in your wheelchair,
they will tell you so.
Your wheelchair may be considered unsafe if:
- The wheels or other parts
are loose or dangerous.
- One or more tires are flat.
- One or both brakes do not
hold the wheels securely.
- The footrests are missing.
- The battery on an electric
wheelchair is dead.
Let us know if you are having problems with your wheelchair or scooter.
If you use a manual wheelchair, please provide an attendant if you
require assistance over rough terrain or steep slopes. Also provide an
attendant if the combined weight of you and your wheelchair exceeds 350
pounds. These are conditions which present a safety hazard to you, the
driver, and the vehicle.
Our lifts can hold wheel chairs up to 30" wide, 48" long and
up to 600 pounds in weight when occupied. If you have a wheelchair that
exceeds this size and weight, we will do our best to serve you. Let us know
if your wheelchair is oversized.
If you use a wheelchair and have steps at your residence or destination,
arrange for someone to assist you up and down the steps.
If you use an electric power scooter, it is safer for you to transfer to
a seat while riding on the vehicle. We will help you to a seat and then
secure your scooter.
DART transports riders who use portable medical equipment, such as
oxygen. If your equipment is awkward in size or shape, and you are not able
to carry it or operate it independently, someone should travel with you.
The driver cannot safely help you onto the vehicle and carry the equipment
at the same time. The driver cannot dispense oxygen or operate any other
life support equipment.
You must be able to hold your equipment securely, or we must be able to
secure the equipment on the vehicle. We cannot transport equipment that
cannot be secured.
OTHER TIPS FOR GOOD SERVICE
If You Have Things To Carry
Drivers will help you carry your packages or bags of groceries if they
can safely do so in one trip while providing you assistance.
Limiting your grocery bags or packages assures plenty of room on the
vehicle for our riders.
Please do not bring extra large, heavy, or odd size items on our
vehicles. DART also does not move personal belongings from one residence or
facility to another. If you need someone to help you move or carry large
items, please contact your family or friends, a volunteer agency, delivery
service or moving company.
If the Roads Are Snowy or Icy
During severe weather, DART reserves the right to limit or stop service
if road conditions become unsafe or impassable. We may have to cancel or
reschedule trips.
Many delays occur when road conditions restrict normal service. Please
consider canceling or rescheduling trips that are not essential. We will do
our best to provide service for essential trips.
If You Lose Something While Riding
Please keep all personal belongings with you on the vehicle. The driver
is not responsible for these items. Please check for your belongings when
leaving the vehicle.
If you lose an item, please call DART immediately with information about
your trip and we will attempt to locate it for you.
We are not responsible for returning lost items. DART
stores all lost and found items for 60 days and then disposes of unclaimed
items.
If You Are Diabetic
Please bring a small snack with you in case you have to travel a long
time. Be sure you have notified DART in advance to alert them of this need.
If You Need Medication on Your Trip
Please be sure you have a sufficient supply to last until we get you
back home.
If You Are Sensitive to Weather Conditions
Please dress appropriately.
If You Travel with Oxygen
Please be sure you have enough supply to last until we get you back
home.
If Your Wheelchair, Scooter, or Life Support Equipment is
Battery-Operated
Please make sure it has enough charge to last throughout your trip with
us.
